A former Sri Lankan Minister and cricket world cup winning captain was arrested on Monday over a shooting incident.
The Police said that Arjuna Ranatunga was arrested over a shooting incident at the state owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) office.
The police arrested Ranatunga after he was accused of being involved in the shooting incident in which one person was killed.
Petroleum trade unions launched a strike in Sri Lanka over the death of the CPC employee.
The unions demanded the arrest of Ranatunga over the death of the employee.
The shooting incident took place when former Minister Arjuna Ranatunga arrived at the location.
A tense situation arose with some people attempting to assault Ranatunga.
Ranatunga’s security guard opened fire injuring at least two people.
One person succumbed to his injuries in hospital later.
Ranatunga’s security guard was arrested over the shooting incident.
The incident took place amidst political tensions in the country after the President had sacked the Prime Minister and formed a new government. Ranatunga was part of the government under the deposed Prime Minister.
